For over one hundred years a hand-weaving mill has existed in the Irish village of Kilcar. In the sixties, the mill made the shift from hand weaving to modern machinery with the hope of becoming more competitive. It was soon apparent, however, that something crucial had been lost.
A decade later, Studio Donegal was founded by Kevin and Wendy Donaghy with the goal of maintaining and preserving the long running tradition of hand-weaving in South West Donegal.
Studio Donegal is an important part of the social fabric of the area. Many of the yarns used in our weaving operation are created in an adjacent spinning mill, Donegal Yarns. We are also a significant tourist attraction, encouraging visitors to Slieve League to stop and see firsthand the skills involved in hand-weaving and garment construction.Today, thirty years later, the Studio enjoys its second generation of family ownership.
Tristan, Kevin and Wendy’s eldest son, has drawn together a small team of people with great skills and experience who are dedicated to making an ongoing success of the business and keeping the crafts and skills involved alive.
Studio Donegal produces contemporary men’s and women’s wear lines as well as a range of textiles for the home.
